The Story of Tarkastamo
EXPERIENCE AND FRESH IDEAS GUARANTEE QUALITY!
Behind Tarkastamo are two long-standing entrepreneurial families from Oulu, with decades of experience in the restaurant and event business in Oulu: the Forsman family, known from the restaurants Puistola and Pannu, as well as Ilpo and Roope Sulkala, known from 45 Special, Zivago, Heinäpään Oluttupa and events produced by Pro Piknik Festivals Oy.
There used to be a meat inspection station located exactly in the same spot in the Market Square, monitoring the quality of the goods sold at the Market Hall. In honour of that, the name “Tarkastamo” (”Inspection Office”) creates a connection to the area’s history. A modern and rugged entity that embodies the area’s maritime history is brought to life, as experience and the fresh perspectives of the younger generation merge into a collaborative effort for the benefit of Tarkastamo.

Tarkastamo is easy to reach from both near and far, as it is located right next to the city center, at Oulu’s Market Square. The main entrance is located at Saaristonkatu 1C. During the summer, you can access Tarkastamo’s patio directly from Oulu’s Market Square, next to the Market Square Policeman’s statue.
The nearest bus stops are on Torikatu. We recommend leaving your bikes at the bike racks located in the Market Square area. It’s exactly one kilometre from the train station to Torinranta, so you can easily walk there.
All the city centre hotels are within walking distance of Tarkastamo. Best of all, the Scandic Go Hotel is located in the same building as Tarkastamo, offering a truly convenient accommodation option under one roof for those attending events at Tarkastamo.
The nearest parking spots are located on the northern side of the Market Square. The Aimo Park parking garage is located beneath the Scandic Go Hotel in the same building. There is also an underground parking garage at Kivisydän; the closest lift to Tarkastamo is the “Tori” lift at the west end of corridor F. The entrance to Kivisydän is at the corner of the Market Square, at the west end of the Radisson Blu Hotel.
You can find the opening hours for Tarkastamo’s Main Room and Klubi in Tarkastamo’s event calendar. Doors open 1 hour before the start of the event or concert; the artists’ showtimes are listed in the event calendar. During the week, events generally start at 7:00 p.m., and on weekends (Fri–Sat) at 8:00 p.m. You can find the restaurant’s opening hours on the restaurant’s page.
The age limit for events at Tarkastamo is generally 18 years. We will also organise events intended for those under 18, and we will always announce these separately. You can check the age limits for specific events on Tarkastamo’s event calendar.
Tarkastamo’s door service fee (including cloakroom service) is €4. The fee is charged upon entry, even if you have purchased a ticket in advance. Coats, backpacks, and large bags must be left in the cloakroom during events and shows.
Tickets for our events can be purchased in advance from our online store or at the door on the day of the event, if tickets are still available. We recommend buying tickets in advance, as the most popular events sell out quickly. Check ticket prices and availability on the Events page.
Check the exact showtimes on Tarkastamo’s event calendar. As a general rule, events start at 7:00 p.m. on weekdays and at 8:00 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.
Photographing shows and events is generally permitted using devices such as cell phones and point-and-shoot cameras, as long as you do not use a flash and do not otherwise disturb the performers or the rest of the audience! If photography is completely prohibited, we will announce it in advance.
You may bring a DSLR camera into the venue only if you have requested a photography permit in advance. We ask media representatives to contact our producer via email: tuottaja@tarkastamo-oulu.fi.
Tarkastamo is committed to providing an accessible environment for all its customers. The building features an accessible entrance, an elevator, and accessible toilet facilities. We strive to accommodate special needs at all our events. Feel free to contact us, and we’ll be happy to provide more information!
